  • Words heal at Sandton City with Riky Rick Foundation

In a powerful fusion of purpose and creativity, Sandton City has partnered with the Riky Rick Foundation to launch “Words That Heal”, a bold new mental health initiative that brings art and activism together. The campaign couldn’t come at a more important time, as South Africa prepares to observe Mental Health Month this October.

    Giving Voice to Healing

More than just a mall, Sandton City is turning into a platform for change, inviting South Africans to break the silence around mental health — especially among the youth. With over 60% of South Africa’s young people reporting mental health challenges, “Words That Heal” aims to inspire hope, healing and connection through words.

The campaign encourages members of the public to submit short voice notes of encouragement via WhatsApp to 063 980 5816 before 8 August 2025. These messages will be curated into a one-of-a-kind song of hope, set to be released later this year on streaming platforms — with proceeds funding free therapy sessions for young people, facilitated by the Riky Rick Foundation.

    Artivism in Action

Founded in honour of the late music icon, the Riky Rick Foundation champions artivism — using art as a tool for activism, healing, and social change. The Foundation’s mission is deeply rooted in promoting mental wellness, creativity, and the power of safe spaces for South Africa’s youth.

What’s Next: A Pop-Up Tribute During Mental Health Month

As Mental Health Month approaches, the initiative will evolve. A pop-up experience is set to open at Sandton City in September and October, featuring:

    • A listening station for the song of hope and Riky Rick’s final album
    • Limited-edition merchandise with personalisation options
    • Live art and collaborations with visual artist Samurai Farai

All profits and pledges will support the Riky Rick Foundation’s ongoing work in youth empowerment and mental health advocacy.

    “Believe in Young People”

The campaign echoes Riky Rick’s enduring message: “Please believe in young people. Give them as many opportunities as they need to prove themselves.” Through this campaign, Sandton City and the Riky Rick Foundation are doing just that — opening a space where words become medicine and creativity becomes a lifeline.
