Johannesburg is about to turn a bright shade of orange this November as Cotlands launches its very first Run to Play fun run and walk. Taking place on Saturday, 22 November 2025 at the scenic James and Ethel Gray Park in Birdhaven, the event is more than just a run — it’s a movement that combines fitness, family fun and a powerful purpose.
Designed for all ages and fitness levels, participants can choose between 2km, 5km and 8km distances. Whether you’re lacing up for a jog, walking with little ones, or racing towards the finish line, every step helps highlight a critical issue: the fact that 58% of South African children are not enrolled in any early learning programme.
“At Cotlands, we believe play is powerful,” says Nozizwe Dladla-Qwabe, Cotlands Acting CEO. “By entering Run to Play, you’re not just running — you’re helping us advocate for every child’s right to quality early learning through our toy libraries and playgroups across the country.”
But make no mistake, this day is not all serious business. Expect a pop-up toy library, children’s entertainment, live music, food stalls and plenty of orange energy. Families are encouraged to come in costumes, add colour and creativity, and soak up the festive atmosphere.
And for corporates? Run to Play offers the perfect chance to turn year-end team-building into something meaningful. Companies can enter teams, celebrate their people, and make a tangible difference by supporting access to early learning in under-resourced communities.
So, mark your calendars, gather your family, friends, or colleagues, and get ready to Run to Play, Run for Purpose. This isn’t just another race — it’s about igniting potential, one playful step at a time.

This Women’s Month, we’re talking hormones — those powerful little messengers that influence everything from your mood to your metabolism. They’re not the enemy, but they do need understanding.
Certified health coach Nazira Parton from Hibiscus Health Coaching gives us the lowdown on keeping them happy and balanced.
Understanding Hormones and imbalance
Hormones play a critical role in regulating our bodily functions, including growth, metabolism, blood sugar control, bone density, reproductive function and sexual health.
Hormone imbalances occur when there is too little or too much of a particular hormone.
These imbalances often lead to a range of symptoms including:
Irregular periods, heavy bleeding, or skipped periods
Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS) which may bring about mood changes, breast tenderness, bloating, skin breakouts, cramping and fatigue
Difficulty conceiving due to an imbalance in progesterone and oestrogen
Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) characterised by high androgen levels, insulin resistance, and ovarian cysts – leading to infertility and other health problems
Menopause which occurs when menstruation ceases due to a decline in oestrogen and progesterone production. Women experience a range of symptoms from hot flushes, weigh gain to brain fog and insomnia.
Thyroid disorders which lead to changes in weight, fatigue and other symptoms due to an imbalance in hormones regulating metabolism
Psychological symptoms like mood swings, anxiety and irritability
Primary Hormones and their Functions
Factors affecting hormonal balance
Sugar – unstable blood sugar levels can lead to insulin resistance which causes an increase in oestrogen production. Many women experience weight gain around the belly area. This in turn increases levels of the aromatase enzyme, which makes more oestrogen, causing further imbalance.
Sugar affects inflammation levels in our bodies. Inflammation increases the c-reactive protein which is used as an indicator of inflammation in our bodies.
Alcohol – results in higher free oestrogen in the body and depletes the body of B vitamins. Alcohol is a liver toxin impeding the body’s ability to metabolise oestrogen, increasing the risk of breast cancer. Sleep is affected too.
Exposure to toxins, pollutants, and endocrine-disrupting chemicals – including pesticides and herbicides interfere with hormone production. This can for example affect the release of Luteinizing Hormone (LH) hormone, altering the ovulation process.
Chronic stress – Cortisol is one of your stress hormones. If you’re experiencing chronic stress and not taking care of yourself, your body produces more cortisol and consequently does not do a good job of producing progesterone.
Health and Lifestyle Strategies to Balance Hormones
Address nutritional needs according to your cycle
A woman’s nutritional needs differ depending on the cycle phase she is in. This simplified overview might give you an idea what cycle syncing is all about and how it can be tracked according to the moon cycle.
Follicular phase (7-10 days) the concentration of all hormones is quite low. Therefore, women can eat anything fresh and full of nutrients. For example; oats, avocados, citrus fruits, beans and lentils, as well as nuts (if no sensitivity).
Ovulation (3-4 days) women should eat lighter grains such as amaranth or quinoa but can still enjoy plenty of vegetables such as red bell peppers, eggplants, spinach or endives and fruit with high antioxidant levels such as berries.
Luteal phase (10-14 days), when many women suffer from PMS symptoms, vegetables and fruit with lots of fibre such as sweet potatoes, squash or celery as they help to stabilize our blood sugar, decrease bloating and eliminate mood swings.
During menses (3-7 days), it is important to eat foods with a high nutritional content that are low in sugar and have a high-water content. The female body is renewing in this phase and requires us to be particularly supportive of our bodies in this phase.
Flaxseeds, broccoli and certain goods quality whole soy products like tofu, tempeh, natto, miso, soy sauce also help oestrogen metabolism.
Seed Cycling
Incorporate specific seeds in your diet according to your menstrual cycle phase. This supports natural hormonal balance by providing targeted nutrients.
Day 1-14 of your cycle:
Add (1 tablespoon each) flaxseed and pumpkin see to your meals
Day 15-29 of your cycle:
Add (1 tablespoon each) sunflower and sesame seeds
Balancing your blood sugar – make sure every meal has a good source of healthy fats, fibre, and a good source of protein. Eating in this manner helps prevent spikes in blood sugar and insulin levels, achieving more stable energy levels.
Cut out refined carbohydrates, sugar and processed foods.
Fix the gut and microbiome – Eat more fibre rich and fermented foods like leafy green vegetables, yoghurt, sauerkraut and kimchi.
Reduce caffeine intake. Caffeine can impact your mood and sleep.
Hydration – drink at least 2 litres of water daily.
Meditation –focus or clearing your mind with techniques like breath and visualisation to relax and reduce stress.
Exercise – Include physical activity as part of your daily routine.
Prioritise rest– Sleep at least 7 hours

There’s a quiet power in the work of Thato Toeba — and now the art world is paying close attention. The Maseru-born artist has just been named the winner of the 2025 FNB Art Prize, one of the most prestigious accolades on the continent.
Announced by FNB Art Joburg, Africa’s longest-running contemporary art fair, the award recognises artists who push boundaries and open new conversations in powerful, thoughtful ways. Now in its 18th year, the fair continues to champion art that matters — and Thato Toeba’s work does just that.
A moment of affirmation
“To me, this means a lot,” Toeba shared after receiving the news. “When I started five years ago, I felt very insecure about whether I am an artist or not. This is a very affirming answer to that.”
Born in 1990 in Maseru, Lesotho, Toeba is not only an artist, but also a lawyer and researcher. Their artistic practice — rooted in collage and assemblage — explores themes of identity, power, and representation, using layered images, textures, and text to create works that are both visually rich and emotionally resonant.
Their pieces resist easy interpretations. Instead, they ask the viewer to slow down, look again, and find meaning in the complexity — a rarity in today’s fast-paced visual culture.
The jury’s praise
The 2025 jury — made up of Kim Kandan (FNB Art Joburg), Kenneth Montague (WEDGE Collection, Canada), and Janine Gaëlle Dieudji (Smithsonian National Museum of African Art) — described Toeba’s practice as having a “quiet force” and praised the clarity of vision, formal maturity, and material richness of the work.
“What set Toeba apart was the clarity of vision, the formal maturity of the work and the considered pace of their trajectory,” the jury noted. “There is a distinct sense of control in how they handle composition, texture and text.”
From Lesotho to the world
Toeba’s win is not just a personal milestone — it’s a powerful moment for the growing art scene in Lesotho. “Coming from Lesotho, where we are still trying to build an art ecosystem, I think this is such an important and powerful affirmation of what we are doing,” they said.
Their work has been shown in exhibitions across the continent, including Stevenson’s STAGE initiative in Johannesburg, where they held their first solo show, Phate lia Lekana, in 2023. Other recent exhibitions include Today I wish to talk to your dreams (Mount Nelson, Cape Town), Where Do I Begin (Stevenson, Cape Town), and Propelling Otherness (Morija Museum, Maseru).
Toeba is also wrapping up a prestigious two-year residency at the Rijksakademie in Amsterdam.
What’s next
As part of the prize, Toeba will receive a cash award and will headline a solo exhibition at the Johannesburg Art Gallery in 2026 — home to the largest public art collection on the African continent.
“Thato’s work is careful, considered, and honest about complexity,” said Mandla Sibeko, FNB Art Joburg’s Managing Director. “That’s what makes it not just important, but necessary — especially now, when so much is at stake in how stories are told and who gets to tell them.”
Celebrating creativity with impact
FNB’s involvement in the art world goes beyond just sponsorship. Since 2008, the bank has been committed to empowering artists and supporting the creative economy through its Grassroots to Greatness strategy.
“We congratulate Thato Toeba on winning the coveted 2025 FNB Art Prize,” said Faye Mfikwe, Chief Marketing Officer at FNB. “Art leads change — it plays a crucial role in cultural expression, innovation, and shared prosperity. Supporting artists like Thato is part of how we build a better future, together.”
With this win, Thato Toeba joins an esteemed list of past winners including Gresham Tapiwa Nyaude, Dada Khanyisa, Lindokuhle Sobekwa, Lady Skollie, and Wycliffe Mundopa — all of whom have gone on to leave a significant mark in the global art world.

UJ Arts & Culture, a division of the Faculty of Art, Design & Architecture (FADA), is thrilled to present Desert Poems, an evocative solo dance production by world-renowned dancer and choreographer Vincent Sekwati Mantsoe. These exclusive performances will take place on 11 and 12 April 2025 at the Keorapetse William Kgosietsile Theatre, located at the UJ Arts Centre in Auckland Park, Johannesburg.
Desert Poems features original pieces choreographed by Vincent Sekwati Mantsoe, with additional music by Dizu Plaatjiis’ Ibuyanmo Ensemble.
Desert Poems encapsulates the austere allure and enigmatic tranquility of an environment characterised by extremes. These evocative pieces eloquently depict the scorching sun, the biting wind, the expansive emptiness, and the remarkable tenacity of life. Each movement vividly evokes the hues of the sand, the contours of the dunes and the profound silence of the nocturnal sky. These poems resonate with themes of resilience, adaptation, and the indomitable spirit of survival amidst formidable challenges. Through evocative imagery and contemplative movement language, Desert Poems transports audiences to a realm that is both harsh and breathtakingly beautiful.
“As I create more solo dance works, I increasingly find myself exploring uncharted territory. I believe a guiding force has led me to this point, preceding Desert Poems and other solo pieces, which uniquely connect nature, spirituality and a certain degree of uncertainty,” says Mantsoe of the work.
“I am thrilled to return home and deeply grateful to the University of Johannesburg Arts & Culture for their invaluable partnership in hosting this world premiere. A special thank you to Wesley Maherry for his exceptional lighting design. I am also profoundly thankful to my family in France and South Africa for their unwavering encouragement and love, as well as to my close friends for their silent yet powerful support. Finally, I acknowledge the unseen forces that guide my spiritual journey—without them, this work would not have been possible,” stated Mantsoe.
UJ Arts & Culture is invested in supporting and rebuilding the Johannesburg dance community, re-energising audiences, and celebrating the world-class dance that the city has always produced. “Active engagement and audience building is essential for the dance and theatre sector to flourish in South Africa. This city has long been a hub for world-class dance, and it is important to celebrate and nurture that legacy,” says Pieter Jacobs Head of UJ Arts & Culture
“We are very excited to welcome Vincent to our stage, especially at a significant moment in time as we mark UJ’s 20th anniversary. Creating access for South Africans to experience new and innovative work is central to our mission at UJ Arts & Culture,” he continued.
Join us for the Desert Poems performance on 11 and 12 April at the Keorapetse William Kgositsile Theatre as we celebrate and reignite the spirit of dance and creativity.

Grammy-nominated musician Somi launched her new album reimagining Miriam Makeba with a live performance that amplified the work made in honour of the late activist and musician.
It’s not every day that you experience a live performance that feels like a sonic showpiece. The State Theatre in Pretoria hosted the official launch of Somi Kakoma’s fifth studio album, Zenzile: The Reimagination of Miriam Makeba, on 27 March.
With African roots, her music is directly influenced by her Ugandan and Rwandan heritage. Currently residing in New York City, she became one of the first artists to be part of the historic relaunch of jazz imprint Okeh Records under Sony Music when she signed in 2013.
Kombonation disrupts perceptions of the township by exploring its seldom celebrated beauty and rich culture. The founders’ new Kaofela Kaofela residency conjures the spirit of togetherness.
“There are no galleries around or in townships, and that’s why we want to showcase our work and let people see the deeper meanings and growth in their works, too. I made the decision to do what I love and that’s what I want to inspire in the youth of the townships today,” says Kabelo Sello, 29, who is one half of an artistic duo called Kombonation.
Sello, who is also known as Freshthings, and Kgotso Selomah, the other half of the duo, began their creative partnership through visual storytelling to showcase the beauty of kasi life.
